108 Benjamin served in 40th Foot under Wellington. Battles of Albuhera, Ciudad Rodrigo, Badajoz & Salamanca. Awarded Military General Service Medal 1793-1814 with four bars. Pensioned in 1813. "Meadows Heritage" - 1983 - indicates he was a British Army Captain at the Battle of Waterloo. [It is unlikely that he attained the rank of Captain]

The Somerset Electoral Register, Eastern Division for 1832 (and also 1835) has Benjamin WICKHAM leasing houses and the Horse and Groom Inn at East Woodlands, Frome, Somerset. Seems highly likely that this is our Benjamin given his activities in Adelaide in 1838/39 (see below).

Benjamin arrived "Africaine" 12 Nov 1836 with wife Tabitha and children Eliza, Daniel R, and Lucy. Benjamin was present at the Proclamation of South Australia.

On 31 Dec 1838, Benjamin was granted a licence to sell wine, beer and other malt liquors. He owned Wickham's Hotel South Tce (Town Acre 691) in 1838-1839. In 1839, property to be 'let or sold'.

Benjamin also owned quite a lot of land at various times. Allen's Almanack 1849 has him owning 320 ac Hd Kuitpo, 584 ac Hd Willunga, 84 ac Hd Noarlunga.

In 1837 he owned Town Acres 691 on South Terrace, 609 on Gilbert St and 602 on Gilles St. In Noarlunga, owned Sections 725 and 726 on Onkaparinga River. In Hundred of Kuitpo, Sections 3509 and 3510, known as Clear Hills. In Port Lincoln, half acre allotments 25, 131, 197, 237, 262, 389, 422, 474, 764, 929, 941. Also 20 acre blocks 8 and 58. On Boston Island, half acre lots 66 and 115.

In the Hundred of Willunga, he owned Sections 568, 569, 572, 573, 574, and mentioned in his will, Sections 530, 722, 723, 533, 724, 725, 726. The Govt. Gazette of 6 Aug 1876 also shows Sections 717, 719, 720 and 301 in name of Mary Ann Wickham.

A newspaper obituary at his death indicates he was 104 years old at death. However, the SA Biog. Index indicates born 1791, religion Methodist." John Jennings J_JENNINGS@onaustralia.com.au

1 male and 1 female alive, usual residence Wilmington,a farmer.
Buried 7 Sept 1921 West Tce Cemetery

The Magill Old Folks Home was established in 1917 following long term problems with the existing agencies which cared for the elderly and the infirm. These problems ran back to the nineteenth century and had been known of and the need for solutions discussed for nearly twenty years prior to the opening of the home. In 1988, following negotiations with staff of the Magill Home and the South Australian Housing Trust, agreement was reached to sell the Magill Home site to the Trust for Housing and Unit development. The proceeds were used to construct a new nursing home and hostel units in Tregenza Avenue, Elizabeth South. Residents moved into the new quarters on the 17 October 1989. The new service, named Tregenza Avenue Aged Care Service, comprises 30 nursing home beds, 40 hostel units, a day care centre and a further 40 beds provided in existing housing within the region. The service was officially opened by the South Australian Health Commission Chairman, Dr WT McCoy, on 21 January 1989.

NOTES by Denis Hamilton
===================
Johann was known as John or Jack EAMER. He was Base Born to Maria. The South Australian Reference for the Birth is:- Johann Wilhelm GADE born Thursday 1st May 1879 at Willowie,District of Frome, SA#220/226 Father: Samuel INGLES, Farmer [Info received from Jo HARRIS from Australia on the 1.10.2004 by E Mail to be found in EAMOUR File]. I have entered Johann under Walter EAMER for convenience sake and the fact that Walter "adopted" him and brought him up and he took [or was given] the EAMER name. So all the descendants of Johann/John have not the EAMER blood in them.NOTE: Dr. John JENNINGS informed me that the date of birth was the 1 May 1880. [E Mail rec. 12.1.2004].17.2.2006: John EAMER has the birth date as the 1st May 1879. John has found that the INGLIS/INGLES lineage comes from Duns, Boarders, Scotland. [S.O.G. has Duns under Berwickshire]. Samuel INGLIS dumped Marie [Mary] and married Ruth Elizabeth FOOTE when his mother was three months pregnant. Samuel who lived from 1802 to 1890 arrived in Port Adelaide, Australia in 1854. [There is an INGLIS Clan Group at Yahoo! On Line].

Johann [John] lived in S.A. 18 years and in W.A. 58 years.
Received the "INGLIS FAMILY HISTORY" book Compiled by Jean WILSON on the 4th April 2006 from John Geoffrey EAMER, Australia. Printed in 1983 - does not include Johann, as the writer until eighteen months ago [approx Sept 2004] did not know that Johann existed until John Geoffrey EAMER contacted [Edith] Jean WILSON [nee. INGLIS].

124 Caroline Gade 24yrs, single, a servant died of endocarditis and acute rheumatism. Informant was C M Farr undertaker

[Endocarditis is an infection of a heart valve or the inner lining of the heart (the endocardium). Infection can damage or destroy the heart valves and damage the heart. Endocarditis usually occurs in patients with congenital (i.e., present at birth) or acquired heart conditions (e.g., atrial septal defects, valve disease). ]

[Rheumatic disorder is a non-specific term for medical problems affecting the heart, bones, joints, kidney, skin and lung. The study of, and therapeutic interventions in, such disorders is called rheumatology. The term "rheumatism" is still used in colloquial speech and historical contexts, but is no longer frequently used in medical or technical literature; it would be fair to say that there is no longer any recognized disorder called, simply, "rheumatism". The traditional term covers such a range of different problems that to ascribe symptoms to "rheumatism" is not to say very much: arthritis and rheumatism between them cover at least 200 different conditions.]

168 Dorothy McBEAN (nee EAMER) says 22.10.2005:
As I was growing up, my understanding was that Aunt Carrie's husband was Jim Smith, the owner or manager of a pastoral property in the Murchison north of Meekatharra, and that she lived in Mount Lawley so that her three children could be educated in the metropolitan area.

The first time the name DWYER entered the picture was when ROSE (nee HEAD), Raymond Smith's widow, saw fit to place his funeral notice in the paper under the name RAYMOND DWYER instead of RAYMOND SMITH. People who could have been expected to know what would have prompted her to do that remained silent, and the rest of us like Bill and myself were left to speculate. The best we could come up with was the theory that DWYER and SMITH were one and the same person, the name change being made to cover up some indiscretion in DWYER'S past.

We will probably never know whether my three cousins were DWYERS or SMITHS, but I do know that Josie married KEVIN MCKENNA (an accountant) Nancy married JIM LEWIS (a station manager in the Murchison area of WA) and Raymond married ROSE HEAD.

Bill (my husband) tells me that when he was reading the library book he copied from, after looking for a reference to Pop Eamer he came across numerous references to JIM SMITH as owning or managing a station near Meeka and he took it that the JIM SMITH mentioned was Aunt Carrie's husband.

177 Eric's brother D.G.V. [!] contacted Eric after I had written to D.V.G. and sent me a long letter which I received on the 29 March 1985. Although quite an interesting letter it did not help regarding family names except that he said his Grandmother's name was Sarah - "that certainly was the name of her daughter - she had as far as I know three sons Albert, Ernest & George". I replied to his letter on the 22 May 1985 after I had done some further researching. I wrote to him again on the 27 April 1996 after he had telephoned me on the Easter Monday Bank Holiday when he informed me that he had recently lost his wife - I enclosed the EAMER Family Tree as far as researching had gone - I did not receive an acknowledgement. I wrote to him again on the 20 January 1997 and received a reply on the 29 January 1997. Although a very interesting letter no family names were mentioned [Grandson but no name] but he did say that Phyllis EAMER had lost her sister. He was involved with many projects and had not visited Shire Hall, Reading which he had proposed to do. At the time he was 79 years of age. I never heard from him again and neither did I write again. His address at the time was 24 Dene Road, Cove, Farnborough, Hants GU14 6BZ. [Letters in F.H.Correspondents Ring Binder File]. [Entered 6.2.2006]. EAMER, Eric (I1244)

178 Excerpts from letters written to John Geoffrey Eamer [18/12/1948] by his father Jack, while John and his wife [Lynette] where on extended holidays in Europe, during the last half of 1976.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

[Date Sunday 1st August 1976 - Jack Eamer]
Was talking to Old Jack and Mavis on the phone the other day. Old Jack is not the best but they are both going to fly to Adelaide about the middle of October for Joy's daughter's wedding.

[Dated 10th October 1976 - Jean Eamer]
Old Jack and Mavis where also thrilled to bits when they received their card from you, poor old Jack has had 7 weeks in hospital and is home again from last Sunday. I was speaking to him over the phone and he seemed very frail by his voice. But at 83 it's amazing he pulled through.

[Dated Thursday 28th October 1976 - Jack Eamer]
We went down and saw Mavis and Jack Willows while Rob [middle son] and June [his wife] were here. Old Jack is back home after 8 weeks in hospital and seems to have aged about 10 years in that time. He has lost a lot of weight and very tottery on his legs but I suppose at 81 you can expect him to start showing his age. At least he is all there in the head and still has his sense of humour.

[Dated Monday 08th November 1976 - Jack Eamer]
Poor old Jack Willows passed away in his sleep on Friday night - when Mavis went into his room on Sat morn he was just peacefully lying there.

He rang me on the Friday evening about 5 o'clock and I am convinced he rang to say goodbye. He sounded very frail and fed up with everything and at the end of our conversation seemed to break down and his voice choked up. I told Mum [wife Jean] at tea that I didn't think he would last much longer and so we made arrangements there and then to go down in the weekend and see him but we were too late. Mavis rang on Saturday morning and when Brian [youngest son] called out that it was Auntie Mavis on the phone I knew then that he had passed away.

Ray Smith as usual took charge of everything and made all the arrangements with the undertakers etc. Rose stayed with Mavis on Saturday night.

Joy - Mavis' daughter - flew in from Adelaide about midday Sunday so Mum and I picked her up at the Airport, took her down and saw Mavis at the same time. She didn't seem to bad and enquired after you both so I think it would be nice if you sent her a card - I know she would appreciate it very much.
